Speaking
of Books
|
|
Welcome to the Riverton
Library's first web page. In this space, we'll talk about
books (or, for that matter, whatever we feel like talking about).

Alias
Grace
|
The
novel Alias Grace, by Margaret Atwood, is an imaginative
recreation of the life and crime of Grace Marks, a Canadian serving
woman who in 1843 was convicted of participating in the murder
of her employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery.
Atwood's writing is exceptionally lucid, making this 460 page
book a quick read, but also making it easy to miss the subtlety,
not to say slyness of the narrative. Did Grace do it? Don't take
too much at face value. This may be Atwood's most artful
work. |

The
Magician's Wife
|
Speaking
of books, you might want to try "The Magician's Wife"
by Brian Moore, a novel set during the reign of Napolean III.
It's an interesting confrontation between western
technology and eastern religion: who has the real "magic"?

The
Master Book of the Water Garden
|
Have
you thought about creating a water garden? We've just bought
Philip Swindells' "The Master Book of the Water Garden:
The Ultimate Guide to the Design and Maintenance of the Water
Garden with More Than 190 Plant Profiles (1997)."
This one makes me want to stop by Schwering's and start spending
money. |
|
Gardening
|
We
have been thinking about subscribing to some gardening magazines
at the library. Would people read them? Do we have local
gardening clubs that might be interested? Do you
have a favorite gardening magazine? Stop in and let us
know.
